Tom graduated from Mars High School. Tom's family attended the Presbyterian Church in the area. Tom attended Bryan college for two years, rooming in his freshman year with his future brother-in-law Ed Lieb. Tom then joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War conflict. He served in California doing some administrative work, including writing training manuals. Tom was a member of the 303rd Signal Service Battalion at Camp San Luis Obispo, CA. After leaving the Army, he returned to Bryan college, graduating in 1954 with a B.A. degree. That fall he married Ruth Sutton. Tom also took courses at the University of Southern California and the University of Pennsylvania.

Tom then attended Faith Theological Seminary where he received a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1957. He took the position of instructor at this institution where he remained for many years until most of the faculty broke relationships with Faith and moved enmasse to Biblical Seminary where he remained until his retirement.

Tom and Ruth have lived in the Philadelphia area for many years. He is independent politically and is associated with the Plymouth Brethren. He is a popular Bible conference speaker and continues teaching classes at the Word of Life Conference Center in New York and Florida. He has a true gift for prose and has for many years produced most interesting and humorous poems for their Christmas letters.
